Underground Tools
These tools allow you to build underground tunnels. The tools required for
underground construction are grouped together here. While these tools can also be found scattered across other construction menus, they are available here in a compact format.
The most important tools, specifically those for activating the underground view, are located at the far end of the toolbar. Since long-time players are accustomed to this layout, I am not changing it. So, look there.
Starting a Tunnel
First, build a tunnel portal on a slope at the surface. Only standard, straight slopes are suitable; steep, two-level slopes or corner slopes will not work. To do this, click on the slope with the tunnel tool while holding down the Ctrl key. The Ctrl key is important; otherwise, the tunnel might be completed before you realize it, potentially leaving you bankrupt. After that, switch to the underground view and use the tunnel tool to build, just as you would with road or track tools on the surface.
Tools:
Red up and down arrows The tooltip labels these tools as "Build artificial slopes". This is accurate, as they are terrain-shaping functions. Here, they serve to raise or lower a tunnel end. Consequently, this only works with open tunnel ends. You can then continue building at a level above or below the current one.
Railway tunnels Use these to extend railway tunnels. Visually, one is easily tempted to try building using standard track tools in the underground, but that doesn't work.
Conductor rails and overhead lines for railways Included here as well, since they are frequently needed.
Railway signals Included here as well, since they are also needed inside tunnels.
Tools for removing railway tunnels These are the standard track removal tools; overhead lines and signals are removed along with the tracks.
Road tunnels These are also used for trams. Dedicated tram tunnels do not exist in Pak128.german.
Tram tracks Trams run in standard road tunnels. Standard tracks must be laid for the trams within these road tunnels, which is why they are included in this menu.
Overhead lines for trams Trams often run on electricity, including inside tunnels.
Transformer and Underground Cable Transformers can be built beneath factories. The permitted area beneath the factories lights up in red. The necessary underground cables can be laid beneath the surface. Underground cables do not get in the way and are not as unsightly as overhead lines, though they are significantly more expensive to build and maintain.
Underground View displays the entire underground area. This is useful for getting an overview. However, the "Level View" (the next tool) is better suited for constructing complex tunnel systems spanning multiple levels. Click here again to exit the underground view. Unfortunately, Simutrans version 124-5 has a bug here; under certain circumstances, the underground view can only be disabled via the
Display Settings.
Level View (Map-wide) Switches to the level view, displaying only a single elevation level for the entire map. It starts at the average elevation of the visible map section. The level number is displayed in the top-left corner of the tool. In areas where the terrain is lower, the ground surface is shown. This view is suitable not only for underground areas and tunnels but also for displaying structures beneath bridges and elevated tracks. It is often the only way to place or remove signals beneath multi-lane bridges. The minimap also switches to the level view. Click here again to exit the level view.
Level View (Map-wide) Up Increases the displayed level by one. This tool only works if the level view has already been activated (see the tool above).
Level View (Map-wide) Down Decreases the displayed level by one.
This tool only works if you have already switched to the layer view. (See the tool two positions above)
